Achieving sustainability aims: Abolish the company car / car allowance?

Wednesday 3rd July will be International Plastic Bag Free Day, which has got us pondering on what else we can, and should do, to meet the challenges of creating an environmentally sustainable commerce model. Last week discussions with one of our valued customers centered around the importance changing their internal company policies to align to the company’s sustainability values and objectives.

Ideas we covered included:

1) Abolish the provision of a Company Car or Car Allowance

2) Relocation to sites with good public transport links

3) Change employee contracts and place of work to home-based workers

4) Implement use of video conferencing for sales calls, meetings and staff training

All of these are monumental changes to how the company operates, but all are very valid if we are to really to start addressing the behaviour changes that are required to make our businesses truly sustainable. In our recent blog article Sustainability = Employee attraction, engagement and retention, we referenced a poll that identified that 73% of workers polled demanded improvements to sustainability policies at work. So maybe these changes to the internal company policies won’t be so hard to achieve?
